As cute as they are, the benefits of a pet companion are also backed by research – pet ownership may be associated lower risk of heart disease, improved brain health, and lower rates of depression. Plus, having a dog is a wonderful way to find community, get active, and stay in touch. Dogs can act as support systems, best friends, and buddies — the health benefits are just an added bonus!

Finding Your Furry Best Friend: Choosing the Right Dog Based on Your Lifestyle

Furry friends make for the very best companions — they help us through difficult times, push us outside of our comfort zones, and bless us with their adorable faces each and every morning. What breed of dog is best? There is a slew of variables associated with choosing the right dog breed, from energy level to size, to social behavior. While finding a furry friend that is right for you can be a highly personal process, here is some information on a few breeds to make the decision just a bit easier.

1. Pomeranians – Affectionate and Loving

These little balls of sunshine are adored by many for their fun-loving personalities and puffball-esque appearance. They can also be great companions for those with a little more energy for training, walking, and playing. Compared to poodles, Poms are just slightly higher-effort but are very well-behaved when cared for correctly.

2. Havanese – Attention-Loving and Trainable!

If you have the time and energy to dedicate to training, Havanese may be a perfect fit. They are highly intelligent and trainable, which also means they make for great therapy dogs. They don’t need loads of exercise but love to be the center of attention; so, if you have attention to give, try giving it to a Havanese!

3. Poodles – Smart and Reliable (and they don’t shed much)

If you are looking for a dog that is easily trained, well-behaved, and great in a family setting, a Poodle may be the choice for you. They are fairly low energy, so they only really need one daily walk to stay healthy. On top of that, they do not shed, and are fairly low maintenance, putting them at the top of the list for recommended senior dogs. Not to mention how cute they are!

4. Pug – Cuddly and Sleepy

Low-effort, low-energy, maximum snuggles. Pugs are great dogs if you’re just looking to hang out and relax with your new furry companion. They don’t need much exercise and are fairly content to hang out on the couch most of the day; but be warned — they snore!

There are countless ways to begin living a healthier and more fulfilling life, and RevUp is here to help you stay aligned with your goals. Ask your health coach if you have any questions!
